We are a non-profit, artist-led residency, project, and meeting space in Redruth, Cornwall.

Inclusive arts charity Shallal is happy to be returning to Back Lane West for the fifth year running for their annual October combined arts residency. This year the residency has Arts Council England funding to work with local community groups and a wide range of artists, widening awareness of their new inclusive visual art studio at Krowji creative hub.

The themes for 2019 are; 3D, working bigger in paint, electronic music, puppetry, animation, lighting design and illustrating Shallal’s new poetry anthology. Artists will research and develop new ideas often in collaboration with others, and in new mediums.

On Saturday 26th October, 3-6pm Shallal are hosting Talking with light: a talk and Q & A with light artist Peter Freeman. The talk will begin at 3pm, followed by a showing of Shallal soundscape and dance work from 4pm, with time for discussion from 5pm.

Then on Thursday 31st October, 3-6pm join Sahllal to see work made through experimentation, collaboration and play by diverse artists during their residency.

“Back Lane West is Shallal’s annual opportunity to work outside of our comfort zones, learn from
each other and invite completely new artists to take us to new places…This year we have been lucky enough to have a puppet specialist, a light artist and a number of filmmakers as well as returning themes and artists. This enables participating artists to find new forms of self-expression and new vocabularies as well as making new creative partnerships with others.”

Sophie Blagden

The Bottle Trap – Sophie Blagden

Sophie is an artist and facilitator, whose practice includes sound, print, sculpture and costume.

Her works often reference places on the edge of a city, tucked in by green belts and infrastructure that is pushed outwards: ring roads, waste facilities, nature reserves. During her September residency at Back Lane West Sophie will be researching the Great Crested Newt as a symbol of slowness and resistance.

On Thursday 26th September, from 17.30, we gathered for pond slime cocktails and an informal reading of The Bottle Trap, a radio play developed by Sophie Blagden during her time at Back Lane West.

Sharon Kelly

Sharon Kelly : August, mini residency

Sharon’s practice gravitates around drawing and her interest spans the intersections between art / life; art / health and art / sport. Much of her work takes its generative force from personal experience and in recent years she has explored the parallels between running and drawing (creative force and process).

During her short residency Sharon welcomed the opportunity to return to the West Country taking time to reflect on life’s passage and notions of ‘revisiting’.
