We are a non-profit, artist-led residency, project, and meeting space in Redruth, Cornwall. We aim to support, engage and build a nationally and internationally connected, contemporary visual art community in the South West.
The Bottle Trap – Sophie Blagden
Sophie is an artist and facilitator, whose practice includes sound, print, sculpture and costume.
Her works often reference places on the edge of a city, tucked in by green belts and infrastructure that is pushed outwards: ring roads, waste facilities, nature reserves. During her September residency at Back Lane West Sophie will be researching the Great Crested Newt as a symbol of slowness and resistance.
Join us on Thursday 26th September from 17.30 for a drink and an informal reading of The Bottle Trap, a radio play developed by Sophie Blagden during her time at Back Lane West.
Sharon Kelly : August, mini residency
Sharon’s practice gravitates around drawing and her interest spans the intersections between art / life; art / health and art / sport. Much of her work takes its generative force from personal experience and in recent years she has explored the parallels between running and drawing (creative force and process).
During her short residency Sharon welcomed the opportunity to return to the West Country taking time to reflect on life’s passage and notions of ‘revisiting’.

Open evening, Saturday 3rd August, 18.00 – 20.00
Daniel Phillips is a painter based in Redruth and currently developing an MA practice-based research project at Plymouth College of Art. His research trajectory examines how contemporary painting practice could have agency in the production of presence, in the context of lost or effaced work from art history. This is a chance to see new work and to speak to Daniel at the culmination of his research residency at Back Lane West.Read More
