Carysella Wilson
Carysella Wilson August Residency

In these paintings and drawings Carys continues to explore her experience of walking as a woman. Longer, more remote walks or shorter regular local walks from her home in Penwith provide source material: internal inspiration such as repeated movements, changes in gait, and breathing patterns, alongside external factors such as changing weather and terrain exist in Carys’ paintings as series of marks and patterns. These non visual starting points sit alongside observational studies, as Carys explores the (self) scrutiny she feels when walking or running, of always ensuring she is ‘safe’ as a lone female, the sub conscious safety nets she has created for herself, ones which many women also take heed of: not walking in remote locations at night, carrying a phone, avoiding underpasses when the daylight has gone. This layer of anxiety is always present, and Carys strives to give a sense of this feeling of being potential prey in her visual work.
