Straight & Crooked Thinking

Straight and Crooked Thinking and Alias Hub

Saturday 27 November 2010

For our first Straight and Crooked Thinking event, an afternoon of ideas, discussion and food, we have joined with Alias to host an Alias Hub with the aim of providing space for dialogue and peer support.

Megan Wakefield will be leading the discussion with a presentation of a paper which explores early reflections on her research findings, in particular self-constructed spaces for interaction between artists, aspirations for these spaces, the ethics and emotional landscape of encounters. This paper was first presented at the Art School Alternatives symposium in Liverpool in October.

Megan is studying for an AHRC-funded collaborative doctorate with Spike Island and UWE in Peer Learning in Contemporary Art Networks. She works with the Associates Programme at Spike Island programming events and activities, as well as coordinating the Associates reading group. She is also a freelance art writer and has collaborated on several projects which explore art, text and language, including Art & Writing (Spike Island, 2009), Reading for Readings Sake (Islington Mill, 2010) and Tertulia (Arnolfini, 2010).

5.00pm Presentation followed by discussion – FREE
6.30pm Meal – £5 (please email us if you would like to stay for food).

4.00pm – 5.00pm Alias Surgery-an opportunity to drop in and meet with Alias representatives at the BLW space who will offer advice and sign posting.

Alias is a platform built by artists for artists for the development of artist led groups in the South West of England.

TOAST

A participatory performance by Bryony Gillard.

Smartly dressed wine waiters will serve guests champagne in crystal glasses.
Guests will be invited to contribute to a continuous ‘toast’ that will occur every 20 minutes. Guests are brought to attention by the clear, crisp sound of metal against crystal acting as a bell. Births and Deaths, good news or a moment of reminiscence or celebration; the traditional toast marks the signposts of a life, often the toast itself can turn into a miniature-biography.

Investigating the dynamics of social gatherings, Bryony Gillard invites the exhibition visitors to contribute to a collaborative public toast.

Narrative Sculpture Series is an interdisciplinary exhibition project investigating concepts and notions of narrative in contemporary. It is currently occupying the previous Boots space in Redruth until the end of November. You can find out more information about their activities on their Facebook page.
