Opportunities & Engagement
BLW’s core programme is grounded in its artists’/artist groups’ self-funded residencies, projects and events. As an artist-led initiative our aim is to provide a supported space and critical community to allow artists to develop work and professional practice; to explore and experiment not only with practice, but also in terms of audience engagement and involvement.
We therefore welcome residency/project/event applications – from individual artists, collaborators, artist groups, curators, writers, arts organisers….
Thanks to the Arts Council Emergency Fund we’re delighted to be able to offer the Back Lane West Project space free of charge to locally based artists, needing space to develop or realise new work at this time.
Whether you’re struggling to work from your kitchen table, worried about returning to a shared studio space, finding you have some unexpected time whilst you’re furloughed or would just like to take advantage of our small library, A3 laser printer and tools let us know.
At this time, Back Lane West is only available to single occupants or collectives who are all part of the same household, and there will be no open evenings or events in the space.
We’ve also introduced a cleaning tick sheet for residents and a 10 day fallow period between occupants to help minimise any potential risk of Covid-19 transmissions.
Back Lane West is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, and this opportunity is intended to support artists with reduced means/financial hardship – particularly in the light of the current crisis. If you would like to use the space and would have been financially comfortable and happy to pay our usual fee, we would be very grateful for a donation of any size which could be put towards support for future residencies.
The first two periods available are:
29th June – 23rd July
3rd August – 27th August
To apply please send the following information to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Residency Application’ as the subject line . The deadline for applications to the July and August residencies is midnight on Sunday 7th June.

We also welcome applications from artists based locally, nationally or internationally for December 2020 and anytime in 2021, given the current situation we are happy to take no commitment provisional bookings and booking enquiries with flexible dates. We ask a small fee of £200 for artist residencies/projects lasting up to four weeks at BLW – £150 for up to 2 weeks – to help cover our costs. (Please note, standard residencies last 4 weeks beginning on the first Monday of the month.)
