Laura Hopes

My work focuses upon the shifting relationship between land & people in rapidly changing climates. My sculptural practice over the last couple of years has been preoccupied by agricultural byproducts, natural materials emerging from environmental imbalance and industrial structures.

I’m using this residency to focus upon testing and translating these sculptures that have emerged from site-specific work for a gallery context. I’ll be bringing expansive works created over the last few years alongside and into conversation with each other. In the initial few weeks, the wool and forms from Flockstones (shown in Exeter Contemporary Open) and Deadstock (Studio Paradiso & Plymouth Art Weekender) have been utilised and experimented with in BLW. Over the coming weeks of the residency these will be followed by the wooden scaffolding and clamps from the recent Remember Nature commission by the Gustave Metzger Foundation Functional Disobedience and the bracken and willow Cuckoo hide, recently resurrected at RAMM.
