Shaun C Badham – The Plotlanders

Open evening: Thursday 17th May 2018, 5pm-8:30pm

Badham will be producing a new body of work for Back Lane West Residency titled The Plotlanders. ‘The Plotlanders’ were a community who resided in Laindon in Basildon, Essex (the artists hometown) between 1900s and 1970s. The Plotlanders were known for their strong community ties and DIY ethos, as many built there own homes from scratch, at times using unconventional means. In 1949 Basildon was designated as a New Town, which led to multiple compulsive purchase orders on the Plotlanders.

Shaun has worked for the last three years with Laindon District Community Archive that have set out to preserve the Plotland history. Shaun has recently begun to re-explore previous Plotlands sites discovering old wells, foundations and bricks embedded in the ground. This image of bricks will be the starting point for this new body of work and a series of brick making workshops at the gallery.
