“…. and though the journey is a sometimes painful experience, it contains within it everything the destination promises.” (Dan Richardson 2013)

Dan’s recent series of paintings express themselves in the richly decorative, utopian beauty, and conflict narrative aesthetic of a classic Japanese culture. This aesthetic provides the rich ground – with its glimpses of ‘the destination of promise’ (as above) – within which Richardson creates a narrative journey of an internal power struggle between disputed positions of subjectivity induced by our own conflicted contemporary culture, which plays itself out across and between the paintings.

Dan Richardson is Back Lane West Resident for February & March.
